The Dubai-based businessman Ricardo Badoer is now at odds with the board of Sumac Microfinance Bank (SMB) and is looking to pull out of the company.
Having made his fortune in cryptocurrency with Aidos Kuneen (ADK), which is part of his Badoer Investments stable, in July 2018 the Swedish investor stumped up nearly $1 million to acquire a 16% stake in SMB.
Now its principal shareholder, he has been trying to take control of it in recent months. However, the chairman of the bank, John Kibatha Njoroge, has refused to give way and Badoer's pitch has failed to win the backing of SMB shareholders.
The businessman's financial dealings are being closely monitored by the Central Bank of Kenya and, aware of this, the other main shareholders in SMB are keen not to compromise themselves in the eyes of the institution.
